A lot of people still fear their dentists. They only remember them if the they are in extreme pain. When this happens, that is the only time they would call and request for an appointment. Children and adults as well have the dental phobias, which makes them anxious and very hard to handle patients when it comes to dental treatments.
As early as a child gets his first set of teeth, parents should start bringing them for a check-up in order to maintain a beautiful healthy smile and maintain a cavity free mouth. When going to the dentist, you will notice that different dentists have different approach when it comes to handling patients especially the fearful ones. The dentist will base the approach depending on the personality of the patient.
Some patients can be categorised into different behaviors. There are positive behaviors which are patients who are open to communication and cooperative and the negative behaviors such as apprehensive, reluctant, hard to manage and the fearful patients. Those people who are cooperative and willing to undergo dental treatment can easily be treated by dentists whilst those who are negative and have phobias are the ones needed to be managed and handled in a different technique.
Patients usually want to have the most comfortable encounter with their dentists. They do not want to hear drilling, see blood, needles and other scary paraphernalia they are not familiar with. They do not want to hear or feel pain on their appointment so the dentist will have to do the treatment with utmost care and choose their words and talk to the patient without scaring them to avoid any further phobias.
The comfort zone of the patient is important, that s why dentists have behavioural management training in order to make their patients overcome dental phobia.
Making your first encounter with the dentist is usually the most important for the both of you. Your dentist would want you to maintain in your comfort zone. Both children and adults should have their first encounter with the dentist a happy one. For kids, there is usually the tell-show-do method wherein the dentist will present to you his tools in a manner that won t scare the kid. As for adults, since you can communicate already and speak your own mind, the first appointment is to tell your dentist what makes you fearful of them and then they will explain to you in a way that won t make you fear of the treatment needed to be done.
Next method is wherein the patient would still be in control. You and the dentist will have pre-agreed signals such as hand stop signals wherein you raise your hand if you feel pain or when you want to rest your mouth. This is part of the anxiety control wherein you and your dentist have to trust each other to continue treatment.
If you are fearful of the drilling part, you may want to bring an iPod player or music device so you won t hear the awful sound. Usually inside the dental clinic you will see that the dentist has relaxing music playing or a visual movie or accent piece wherein you can focus and feel comfortable rather than hearing the awful noise around you. This is part of the distraction method.
Dentists also love giving positive reinforcement to take away the anxiety. A lot more dentists are more aware with dental phobias and have treated numerous patients who have these. They can offer you desensitation or sedation if you are really afraid of undergoing dental treatment. Overcome your dental phobias because remember that dentist s aren t really there to harm you but would like to give you the best service there is.
